OPEN NOVICE WEIGHTLIFTING

COOPER A. C.

JUNE 23, 1957

CONTEST

Reported by Morris Weissbrot

Just the bare figures of this contest don't begin to tell even half the story. This was one of the best novice contests ever held in this area, with lifters. coming from various sections of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. A meet of this type is of tremendous value in developing new lifters, and giving some of the younger fellows a chance to win fine trophies. The competition was very keen in the three heavier classes, and the winners were not actually determined until the final clean and jerk. Arnold Biassey, of New Haven, Conn., did some very fine lifting, just narrowly missing making 760. Larry Mintz, of the Cooper A. C. made sure of first place in his class with 225 in the C. & J., and then cleaned 265 but missed the jerk. This young lad gives promise of becoming one of our leading lightweights. Barely out of his teens, he started lifting nine months ago, and did 550. His best to date is 650. At a bodyweight of 142 lbs. he has curled 140, proned 300, deadlifted 400, and made a full squat with 405! What we need is more of these Open Novice meets ... who knows? .. we may find another Vinci or Berger or Anderson!

Here is an example of perfect position in the jerk. Jim George is driving up 360 lbs. at the Senior Championships in Daytona Beach. Note the locked arms, the forward step under the bell. It will be easy for him to stand erect and hold the weight for the count. Oddly enough, Jim missed his first attempt by poor position. He holds the world record in the 181 lb. class with 388 pounds.
